Los de Aquí, los de Allá y Nosotros: A Spanish-Language Border Story Comes to Yuma

On August 7, 2025, I had the honor of stepping onto a stage for the very first time as part of the grassroots play Los de Aquí, los de Allá y Nosotros, presented at Comité de Bien Estar in San Luis, AZ. Written and directed by Pedro Osuna and produced by Mario Hernandez, this powerful play explores themes of border life, identity, migration, nostalgia, humor, and reflection—all performed entirely in Spanish.

  • Carolina Torres

  • Myself, Marcia Hernandez

With Pedro Osuna as writer and director, and Mario Hernandez as producer, each member of this cast brought their unique background, passion, and dedication to the stage.

My First Time Acting

To be completely transparent, this was my first-ever acting role. From reading the script to discovering the heart of my character, every step was a rollercoaster of emotions. We only had about a month and a half to prepare, but in that short time I learned more about storytelling, courage, and community than I ever expected.

I had never memorized a monologue before, so I decided to record myself reading the script. On my long drives to the studio I listened to it trying to memorize each word and adding my own feel to it as I started learning it. That trick helped me, but the nerves were still real. As the performance date approached, thoughts circled in my mind: What if I forget my lines? What if I freeze? What will my family think?

Together with my castmates, rehearsing at Brush It Art Studio, at Joaquín & Caro’s home, and at Comité de Bien Estar, we built trust, shared laughter, and pushed through our fears.

The San Luis Premiere

Finally, August 7 arrived. With shaky hands and anxious hearts, we took the stage in San Luis. And when the final scene ended, something unforgettable happened the audience rose to their feet in a standing ovation.

People came up to us afterward saying they laughed, cried, and saw themselves reflected in the stories. That moment made every late-night rehearsal worth it.

What made the night even more meaningful was that half of the proceeds were donated to Grupo Actívate / Get Active at Comité de Bien Estar, supporting community health and wellness programs. From the very beginning, this project was about more than art—it was about community.

Now Showing in Yuma

I’m beyond proud to share that we are bringing Los de Aquí, los de Allá y Nosotros to Brush It Art Studio in Yuma, AZ, on Saturday, September 20, 2025. There will be two evening showings, giving you a chance to experience this heartfelt performance for yourself. And yes, my role is fitting I play an artist. 🎨 This character, like so many in the play, reflects pieces of our daily lives at the border: our joys, our challenges, and our unspoken truths.

Why You Should See It

This play isn’t just theater—it’s a mirror. It brings to light the experiences we often don’t talk about but that shape our Latino culture and border life. Stories of migration, identity, family, and resilience are told with humor, nostalgia, and raw honesty.

Even if you don’t speak Spanish, you will feel the emotions on stage. The laughter, the tears, and the power of storytelling go beyond language.
