🎨 5 Fun Things to Do in Yuma This Summer (Yes, Paint Parties Made the List!)

Let’s be real-summer in Yuma gets hot. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay stuck at home or run out of ideas for fun. Whether you're a local looking for something different to do, or just visiting the area, here are five fun ways to beat the heat and make some great memories-including one that might just include a paintbrush (wink wink)!

1. Float the River or Hit Gateway Park

If you haven’t done a river day yet, what are you waiting for? The Colorado River is a must during summer. Bring a tube, kayak, or just a cooler and some floaties and let the current take you. Gateway Park is a great place to launch, and there’s shade, picnic tables, and room to hang out. Tip from the locals: go early before the sun gets too intense and don't forget your sunscreen!

2. Join a Paint Party at Brush It Art Studio 🎨

Okay, shameless plug-but seriously, paint nights are a blast. Whether you’re looking for a chill girls’ night, a fun date idea, or something creative to do with the kids, we’ve got a little something for everyone.

This summer we’re doing:

  • Frida Night  (super fun!)

  • Summer-themed workshops for kids - painting and slime workshops!

  • Paint your Pet-Pop art edition!

You don’t need to be an artist—just show up, sip, paint, and have fun.👉 [See what’s coming up here]

3. Cool Off at Waylon’s Water World

Let’s be honest, it’s not summer in Yuma without at least one trip to Waylon’s Water World. Slides, lazy river, splash zones-it’s perfect for families or anyone who just wants to cool off and let loose for the day. Plus, they have open mic nights and bingo nights!

4. Check Out a Local Theater or Music Event

Yuma County has some hidden gems when it comes to live shows. From performances at the Historic Yuma Theatre to community plays happening right in San Luis, it’s amazing to see local talent in action.

One event we're especially excited about is a grassroots Spanish-language theater production titled “Los de aquí, los de allá y nosotros.” It’s being produced by Yuma Times and brought to life by a group of amateur actors with big heart and bold stories to tell. The play dives into important topics like mental health, identity, and migration—all through a local lens. And Mario and I will be acting in it as well.

It’s a PG-13 play, entirely in Spanish, and will take place on August 7 at Comité de Bien Estar (963 East B Street) San Luis. Even more awesome? 50% of ticket sales will go toward supporting Actívate/Get Active, a local group empowering youth through movement and community programs. If you’re into meaningful art and supporting the community, this one’s worth checking out.

5. Mix Art + Snacks for the Perfect Chill Day

Here’s a fun idea: grab a cold raspado or a cafecito from your favorite Yuma spot, then head to a painting class. It’s like self-care with flavor and color! We’ve got AC, good music, and zero pressure just come and create.

We also do private paint parties at homes, venues, even cafés if you’ve got a group and want us to bring the fun to you.

Summer doesn’t have to be boring or blazing hot all the time. Try something new, get creative, and make some memories. And if painting is on your bucket list, we’d love to have you join us at Brush It Art Studio.
